ELLISVILLE – Jones County Junior College’s first March for Veteran’s encountered many of the same obstacles soldiers endure: bad weather! Inclement weather forced the event to be moved indoors, but it didn’t dampen the spirits of the founder and event coordinator for the Mississippi Chapter of the March for Veterans and JCJC employee, Kacie Minnix.
“I just wanted to raise awareness in the community of all the veteran organizations that support our troops,” said Minnix, whose husband is an Iraqi Veteran. “I hope students and the community learns about the needs of our veterans and current service members so they can get involved and help them.”
The walk to honor veterans featured State Senator Chris McDaniel who shared fond memories of his grandfather who was a World War II veteran. “He followed a call to fight Japanese Imperialist….and we won the war because of these great men and women….Thanks for passing the torch of freedom,” McDaniel said, especially addressing the veterans in the crowd.
Minnix’s husband and Army friends spent the afternoon walking alongside a few JCJC students, faculty and staff, and community members. Community sponsors of the event include Corner Market, Dominos, Food Tiger, Fox’s Pizza, Pizza Hut and Subway.
