ELLISVILLE – It was a heartbreaking evening for the Jones County Junior College softball team.
The 12th-ranked Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Lady Bulldogs scored five runs in the top of the eighth inning to defeat the Lady Bobcats, 12-7, in game two of a doubleheader before a good crowd Wednesday at Community Bank Park.
The Lady Bulldogs had posted a 6-1 victory in game one.
The sweep lifts Gulf Coast to 14-5 overall and 2-0 in South Division play. The Lady Bobcats saw their eight-game winning streak snapped and are now 14-4 overall, 0-2 in the division.
JCJC continues league play with a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Friday at East Central Community College. Gulf Coast hosts Co-Lin Community College in a 2 p.m. twinbill on the same day.

It appeared JCJC might come back and gain the split in game two.
The Lady Bobcats fell behind 4-0 after two innings, but clawed their way back into the game. In the bottom of the third inning, Haley Brooke Smith and Shannon Mosley both reached on infield hits and scored on Alex Faciane’s double to left to make it 4-2.
JCJC made it 4-3 in the fifth when Mallory Cowart reached on a bunt single and Smith laced a single to center. Mosley then walked to load the bases. Faciane then looped a ball into the outfield that drove in Cowart, but Smith was called out at third base, giving Faciane a fielder’s choice. A pair of infield popups got the Lady Bulldogs out of the inning without any further damage.
But the Lady Bobcats would finally take the lead in dramatic fashion in the bottom of the sixth.
Heidi Garcich led off with a bunt single. Stacia Whitaker then attempted to sacrifice her to second. Her first bunt attempt was popped in the air and dropped at homeplate by catcher Mandy Fuller.
Given new life, Whitaker then crushed a two-run home run to centerfield, giving JCJC a 5-4 lead.
However, the Lady Bulldogs answered in the top of the seventh when Taylor Bryan led off with an infield single. Gulf Coast then got three straight triples from Courtney Moore, Kayla Herbert and Mariha Partman to score three runs and take a 7-5 lead.
But JCJC came back and came within a whisker of winning the game in the bottom of the frame.
Mosley led off the inning by reaching on an infield single and Faciane followed with a single. K.T. Perkins then sacrificed the runners into scoring position. Jade McLeod then hit a blooper over the first baseman’s head that was dropped by the second baseman, allowing Mosley to score.
Garcich then hit a grounder back to pitcher Linsey Dickerson, who did not throw to any base. That left the bases loaded with one out. Whitaker then came up and tied the game with a sacrifice fly to center, which scored Faciane.
With two outs and the winning run at third base, pinch-hitter Jessmar Walters hit a groundball to shortstop Courtney Fairley. Fairley threw to first and Walters was called out on a bang-bang play to force extra innings.
In the top of the eighth, the Lady Bulldogs plated five runs. With a runner on second and one out, Katy White reached on an infield single. Bryan then reached on an error, allowing Amber Carpenter to score. Herbert’s two-out single scored White and Partman followed with a three-run home run to left-center to give the Lady Bulldogs a cushion.
Cowart and Faciane each doubled and singled for JCJC, while Smith, Mosley and Garcich had two singles each. Whitaker had the home run, while McLeod and Brittany Daniel added singles.
Lauren Candies, 8-3, went the distance and took the loss. She struck out seven, walked none and gave up 16 hits.
Partman homered, tripled and singled for Gulf Coast, Moore tripled and singled twice. Herbert tripled and singled, while Kris Albritton doubled and singled. Bryan and Fairley had two singles each with Fuller and White each getting a single.
Dickerson went the distance and got the win. She allowed 13 hits, walked two and struck out two.

JCJC took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Cowart led off with a single, went to second on a wild pitch, advanced on a bunt single by Smith and scored on Faciane’s groundout.
Gulf Coast tied it in the third when Moore was hit by a pitch, took second on a passed ball and scored on a shallow single to left by Herbert.
The Lady Bulldogs would take a 5-1 lead in the fourth. Fairley led off with a single and was sacrificed to second. Fuller drew a walk and with two outs, Bryan reached on an error that scored Fairley. With the bases loaded, Herbert cleared them with a three-run double.
Gulf Coast added a run when Albritton led off the fifth with a home run to right-center.
Ginger Lonergan, 6-1, went the distance and took the loss. She scattered eight hits, walked three and struck out six.
