Lady Bobcats fall on free throw with .1 second left

CLINTON – East Mississippi’s Jamie Gunter made a free throw with .1 second left to give the Lady Lions a 67-66 victory over Jones County Junior College here Tuesday night in the opening round of the Region 23 Women’s Tournament.
EMCC, 15-9, advances to the semifinals vs. the Mississippi Gulf Coast/Meridian Community College winner at 8 p.m. on Wednesday.
The Lady Bobcats end the year at 19-8.
It was a heartbreaking defeat for the Lady Bobcats.
They trailed for most of the game, but rallied to take a 64-60 lead with 4:02 left when Kianna Harris scored off an offensive rebound.
But EMCC scored six straight points and went ahead 66-64 with 1:36 left when Kiara Quinones-Noa scored. Harris answered with a layup to tie it at 66-66 with 1:18 remaining.
EMCC then missed a shot and JCJC had a chance to take the lead. However, the Lady Bobcats misfired and the Lady Lions got the rebound and called timeout with 21.2 seconds left.
Chadisty Hickman then dribbled the ball out front for most of the remaining time. She then drove inside and missed a shot. Gunter grabbed the rebound and JCJC was called for a foul with .1 left on the clock.
After a timeout, Gunter hit the first foul shot. She missed the second attempt and JCJC grabbed the rebound. However, they had no chance to put up a shot.
Tanecka Carey led JCJC with 24 points. She also pulled down seven rebounds. Harris and Alecia Autman had 10 points each. Autman and Elyssa McKenzie both pulled down eight rebounds and Harris had six boards.
Quinones-Noa led EMCC with 19 points and Gunter added 18.
The Lady Bobcats got off to a good start and took a 12-6 lead with 13:40 left when Carey hit an 8-footer. But EMCC went on a 13-3 run and took a 19-15 lead with 9:25 left when Quinones-Noa scored.
JCJC was within 28-22 with 5:58 left when Carey hit two free throws, but EMCC then had an 11-2 spurt and went ahead 39-24 with 2:22 left when Raven Howard scored.
Gunter’s basket gave EMCC a 43-28 lead with 1:18 left in the half, but JCJC scored the half’s final six points. A free throw by Alondra Rivers with 4.4 seconds left made it 43-34 going into the break.
In Tuesday’s other women’s games, Itawamba beat Baton Rouge Community College (La.), 70-64, and Co-Lin beat Holmes, 65-41.
