ELLISVILLE – Jones County Junior College claimed a pair of wins over two different opponents here Saturday on a splendid day for baseball at Community Bank Park.
Logan Riddell and Andrew Pierce combined to shut out the Jeff Davis Community College (Ala.) War Hawks, 2-0, in JCJC’s first game of the day.
The Bobcats then got a walk-off single from Chad Guice – his fourth hit of the game – in the bottom of the eighth inning to beat the Holmes Community College Bulldogs, 6-5. It was Guice’s fourth RBI of the game.
The Bobcats, now 8-3 on the year, will conclude their season-opening, seven-date homestand on Tuesday against Meridian Community College. The doubleheader begins at 2 p.m.
JCJC will go on the road for the first time on Friday when they take on Panola Junior College (Texas) and Coahoma Community College in a noon doubleheader at Hinds Community College.
Bobcats 2, War Hawks 0
Riddell was tremendous in shutting down Jeff Davis for six innings. He struck out eight, walked none and gave up just four hits. He did not allow a War Hawk runner to reach second base, as he upped his record to 2-1.
Pierce came on in the seventh, did not allow a hit, got a strikeout and notched his first save of the year.
The Bobcats got all the runs they would need with some clutch, two-out hitting in the second inning.
Darion Hamilton led off the inning with a triple to center off of Jeff Davis starter Joey Hedden. Hedden then got a couple of groundouts and Hamilton was not able to advance.
But with two outs, Graham Odom reached on an infield single and drove in Hamilton. Zach Allen then blooped an RBI double and drove in Odom.
Allen doubled and singled for the Bobcats, while Ladd Rhodes and Odom got two singles each. Hamilton had the triple and Nick Ray singled.
Lee Hunter singled twice for Jeff Davis, while Robbie Jernigan and Xavier Cunningham had one single each.
Hedden went four innings and took the loss. He allowed two runs, four hits and walked one. Cole Vickery followed Hedden to the hill, went 1 2/3 innings and gave up four hits. Nathan Edwards got the final out for JDCC.
Jeff Davis travels to Birmingham, Ala., to take on Jefferson State College on Monday.
Jeff Davis had beaten Holmes, 3-2, in the day’s first game.
Bobcats 6, Bulldogs 5
Trailing 5-2, Holmes tied the game with three runs in the top of the sixth. But in the bottom of the eighth, the Bobcats would come through.
Odom was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Allen came up to sacrifice. The ball was fielded by Holmes’ pitcher Channing Sanders, who threw the ball over the first baseman’s head and down the right field line. Odom went to third, Allen made it to second and Rhodes was then intentionally walked to load the bases with no outs.
Guice then came up and ripped a single to left to score Odom and win the game for the Bobcats.
JCJC took a 1-0 lead in the first when Rhodes walked, was sacrificed to second by Guice, took third on Ray’s single and scored on Vito Perna’s sacrifice fly to deep center.
The Bulldogs tied it in the second when Jermaine Liggins reached on an error and scored on Caleb Kellum’s single.
JCJC took a 3-1 advantage in the third. Chase Headrick led off with a double and Odom and Allen walked to load the bases. Guice then doubled in Headrick and Odom.
Holmes got a run in the fourth when Will Henry singled and later scored on Zach Pickett’s single.
The Bobcats made it 5-2 in the fourth when Allen walked and scored on a double by Rhodes. Guice then delivered another double to score Rhodes.
The Bulldogs would take advantage of three walks in the sixth inning to tie the game. Brandon Villareal, Henry and Liggins all walked to load the bases. Pickett had an RBI single, as did Michael Franklin. Kellum’s fielder’s choice tied the game.
West Jones freshman Chase Stewart pitched effectively for the Bobcats. He went five innings, allowed two runs (one earned), three hits, walked none and struck out five. Josh Palmer pitched 1/3 of an inning and gave up three runs.
Ryan Waters, 3-0, went the final 2 2/3 innings and got the win. He allowed three hits, walked one and struck out two.
Guice doubled twice and singled twice for the Bobcats, while Rhodes and Headrick each doubled. Ray, Perna, Hamilton and Jay Dedeaux added singles.
Jason Laxer started for Holmes. He went two innings, gave up three runs (all earned), three hits, walked three and struck out two. Sanders went the final five-plus innings and took the loss. He allowed seven hits, walked two, hit one and struck out two.
Pickett had three singles for the Bulldogs. Kellum, Franklin and Henry had one single each.
Holmes, 8-4, is at Williams Baptist College (Ark.) on Monday.
