Bobcats split twinbill with Northwest

ELLISVILLE – Andrew Pierce threw a five-hitter, Zach Allen drove in three runs and Vito Perna had three hits to lead the Jones County Junior College Bobcats to an 8-1 victory over the Northwest Mississippi Community College Rangers here Wednesday afternoon at Community Bank Park in game one of a doubleheader.
In game two, Northwest posted a 5-3 decision.
The Bobcats, 6-3, will return home on Saturday with a doubleheader against two different foes. JCJC faces Jeff Davis Community College (Ala.) at 2 p.m., followed by a contest vs. Holmes Community College at 4 p.m.
Northwest, 4-2, will travel to East Central Community College on Saturday
Bobcats 8, Rangers 1
Northwest scored a run in the top of the first, but JCJC responded with five runs in the bottom of the frame and never looked back. The Bobcats added a pair of runs in the fifth and one in the sixth.
Pierce, who had pitched well in his first two starts, but had not earned a decision, got his first victory of the season. He went six innings, gave up five hits, one earned run, walked one and struck out six. Jaron Bailey pitched a perfect seventh and recorded two strikeouts.
Perna had a double and two singles, while Allen and Ryan Roberts had two singles each. Nick Ray and Graham Odom also had singles. Roberts finished with two RBIs.
Chad Wardlaw singled twice for NMCC. Drew Klepzig had a double with Josh Johnson and Jeremy Carlisle getting singles.
Tarus Hervey was the starter for Northwest, but failed to record an out. He faced five batters – walking three and hitting two – and all five runners scored. Jake Brigman went two innings and allowed two hits. Bill Higdon pitched four innings, allowed seven hits, walked two and struck out one.
Rangers 5, Bobcats 3
In game two, Ranger starter Garrett Radicioni allowed just two hits, walked none and struck out four as he upped his record to 2-0. Jimmy Braswell pitched the seventh, allowed an unearned run, struck out one and picked up his second save.
The Rangers led 1-0 after one and the Bobcats tied it in the third. Northwest added single runs in the fourth and fifth and the Bobcats scored a run in the bottom of the fifth to make it 3-2. Northwest got two in the sixth and JCJC got one in the seventh.
Blake McIlwain started and took the loss for JCJC. He went five innings, gave up nine hits, three runs (one earned), walked one and struck out one. Ryan Waters tossed the final two frames, allowing two runs (both earned) and three hits. He walked none and struck out two.
Roberts had both of JCJC’s hits – a double and a single.
Kyle Blount singled three times for Northwest, while Braswell singled twice and drove in two runs. Denzel Goolsby also had two singles. Dylan Castoria had a triple, Dex Herrington had a double and Josh Hopkins, Keaton Hankins and Joseph Blair added singles.
