JCJC's Carey named NJCAA Women's Division I Player of the Week for second time this year

ELLISVILLE – Jones County Junior College guard Tanecka Carey continues to rack up national honors.
Carey has been named the NJCAA Women’s Division I Player of the Week for the week ending Feb. 19.
Carey, a 5-foot-9 sophomore from Jackson Murrah, averaged 35 points per game last week in a pair of victories over Southwest Mississippi Community College (90-66) on Feb. 14 and then 8th-ranked Co-Lin Community College (90-80) on Feb. 17.
Against Co-Lin, Carey scored a school-record 53 points. She made 17-of-24 shots from the field, including 8-of-10 3-pointers. She was also 11-of-12 from the free throw line. She also had eight rebounds, five assists and three steals. Against Southwest, Carey scored 17 points, pulled down nine rebounds and had three assists.
Carey, who has already signed with the University of Southern Mississippi, leads the MACJC and ranks third in the nation in scoring with a 24.0 points per game.
It’s her second time this season to be named Player of the Week. She also received the honor for the week of Jan. 9-15.
Carey and the Lady Bobcats will play for the school’s third straight MACJC state championship at 6 p.m. on Thursday at Co-Lin Community College. The Lady Bobcats will meet the winner of Wednesday night’s semifinal game between Co-Lin and Itawamba.
