Lady Bobcats claim two wins in Gwen Magee Invitational

ELLISVILLE – Jones County Junior College had a solid day in the first Gwen Invitational here Saturday on a perfect day for softball at Community Bank Park.
The Lady Bobcats posted a sweep of East Mississippi Community College, beating the Lady Lions 6-1 and 9-2. In the second win over EMCC, Shannon Mosley hit the first-ever home run for the Lady Bobcats in Community Bank Park.
JCJC also dropped a 4-0 decision to perennial power LSU-Eunice. In the tournament opener, LSU-Eunice scored a run in the top of the seventh to edge EMCC, 3-2.
The Lady Bobcats will return to action at home on Tuesday for “Pink Out The Park Day” against Meridian Community College. The JCJC teams will be wearing pink uniforms and fans are encouraged to wear pink to the doubleheader. Game one begins at 3 p.m., with the second game slated for 5 p.m.
LSU-Eunice hosts Pearl River at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, while East Mississippi hosts Hinds at 2 p.m. on Monday.
Lady Bobcats 6, East Mississippi 1
The Lady Bobcats used a four-run, fourth inning and another solid pitching performance from Ginger Lonergan to beat the Lady Lions.
Lonergan (4-0) struck out six and allowed six hits in the game.
JCJC went up 1-0 in the second inning and scored four in the fifth. They got their final run in the fifth when Shannon Mosley singled, stole second and scored on Mallory Cowart’s double.
EMCC’s only run came when Nashedra Barry launched a home run over the left field wall to start the fifth inning.
Mosley singled twice, Cowart doubled and Stacia Whitaker and Jade McLeod each singled for JCJC.
Barry homered and singled for EMCC, while Leigh Ellen Barefield, Lainie Simcox, Cassandra Cobb and DuShini Sanders each singled.
Alex Dawkins started and took the loss for EMCC.
Lady Bobcats 9, East Mississippi 2
The Lady Lions scored in the first when Cayla Coleman singled and came home on Mallory Pace’s single.
JCJC scored three runs in the first when Heidi Garcich and Haley Brooke Smith each singled and Shannon Mosley walked to load the bases. Alex Faciane’s sacrifice fly drove in a run, Smith scored on an error and McDaniel’s single scored another run.
In the second, Smith singled and scored on a single by Mosley. Faciane tripled to center to score Mosley and make it 5-1.
EMCC got a run in the third when Amy Johnson singled, Coleman reached on a fielder’s choice and Pace drove in the run on a fielder’s choice.
The Lady Bobcats made it 6-2 in the bottom of the third when Jessmar Walters led off with a single and Jasmine Jefferson entered as a courtesy runner. Cowart then doubled to center to drive in the run.
JCJC added their final runs of the game in the fourth. Mosley launched her home run over the left field wall to make it 7-2. Faciane reached base and K.T. Perkins singled to center. The ball got past the outfielder and rolled to the wall, allowing Faciane to score. Perkins scored on Walters’ ground out.
Lauren Candies (4-2) pitched the final 4 2/3 innings and got the win. She gave up one hit and struck out four. Starter Mackinzee Bond went 2 1/3 innings, gave up four hits, walked two and struck out one.
McDaniel homered, doubled and singled for JCJC, while Faciane tripled and singled. Smith singled twice. Cowart had a double, with Garcich, Walters, Perkins, McDaniel and Megan Cook adding singles.
Johnson started, went 3 1/3 innings and took the loss. She gave up eight runs and nine hits. Lillian Lindsey pitched 2/3 of an inning and gave up two hits. Barry went the final two innings and allowed two hits.
Coleman, Pace, Johnson, Cobb and Justine Jenkins had singles for EMCC.
LSU-Eunice 4, JCJC 0
Tina Schultz tossed a two-hitter to pace the Lady Bengals to the win. She walked none and fanned five.
Candies (3-2) scattered 11 hits and pitched effectively for the Lady Bobcats. She allowed four runs (three earned), walked none and struck out six.
The Lady Bengals scored all of their runs in the third inning. Chaney Trahan, Haley McCall and Ashley Taylor had singles in the frame.
Haley Brooke Smith broke up Schulz’s no-hit bid with a single to start the fourth. Alex Faciane had JCJC’s other hit, a single to lead off the seventh.
Taylor doubled and singled to pace LSU-Eunice. Trahan and Savannah Havard had two singles each, while Karli Wainwright, Schulz, McCall, Leah Andrus and Katie Ocmand added singles.
LSU-Eunice 3, East Mississippi 2
Tiffany Havard’s RBI single with two outs in the top of the seventh scored Chaney Trahan with the go-ahead run to lead the Lady Bengals to the win.
EMCC had taken a 2-0 lead in the first when Mallory Pace hit a two-run home run. The Lady Bengals tied at 2-2 in the second when Sam Bella hit a two-run shot.
Heather Abshire went the final three innings in relief and posted the victory. She gave up two hits and fanned one. Starter Leah Andrus went the first four innings, gave up three hits and struck out four.
Trahan and Haley McCall had two singles each for LSU-Eunice. Bella homered, while Karli Wainwright, Terrisita Vallery and Havard singled.
Amy Johnson went the distance and took the loss. She gave up eight hits and struck out two.
Pace homered and singled twice for the Lady Lions. DeShuni Sanders and Courtney Castleberry each singled.
