Bobcats split pair with Southeastern Iowa

ELLISVILLE – Vito Perna is making his mark quickly with the Jones County Junior College baseball team.

Perna, a freshman from West Jones, smashed his second home run of the season and pick up the pitching victory as the Bobcats defeated the Southeastern Iowa Community College Blackhawks, 8-1, in the opener here on a spending Saturday afternoon at Community Bank Park.

In game two, the Blackhawks jumped scored four runs in the fifth inning and went on beat JCJC, 5-3.

The Bobcats are now 5-2 on the season and will host Northwest Mississippi Community College in a 2 p.m. twinbill on Wednesday.

The Blackhawks are now 2-2 and will play a doubleheader on Sunday at East Central Community College in Decatur. They meet Baton Rouge Community College (La.) at 11 a.m. and Lincoln Land College (Ill.) at 2 p.m.

Bobcats 8, Blackhawks 1

JCJC went up 1-0 in the third inning when Graham Odom doubled down the right field line and scored on Zach Allen’s single.

Perna got the six-run, fourth inning started with a home run over the left field wall. Chase Headrick doubled down the left field line and Zane Walley followed with a walk. Odom then came through with another double, driving in two runs to make it 4-0. Ryan Roberts followed with another two-bagger to make it 5-0.

Courtesy runner Tate Ratcliff entered for Roberts and would score on a wild pitch. Allen would walk, steal second, advance to third on a wild pitch and score on Nick Ray’s sacrifice fly to make it 7-0.

The Blackhawks scored in the top of the sixth when Wilfredo Torres was hit by a pitch, took second on a wild pitch and scored on Brett Sanders’ double.

JCJC’s final run came in the bottom of the sixth when Allen walked and went to second when Chad Guice was hit by a pitch for the third time in the game. Darion Hamilton’s single would drive Allen home.

Perna went five innings, allowed three hits, walked four and struck out three. Bryce Ladner pitched the sixth inning, allowed one hit and struck out two. Austin Graham pitched the seventh and did not allow a hit.

Perna homered, Odom had two doubles and Hamilton added two singles to lead the Bobcats. Headrick and Roberts had doubles and Allen singled.

Nelson Marchan was the starter and loser for the Blackhawks. He went 4 1/3 innings, gave up seven hits, five runs, walked one and struck out one. Gerardo Matos went the final 1 2/3 innings, gave up one hit, walked three, hit three and struck out two.

Sanders doubled, while Yhoxian Medina, Daniel Charlier and Jorge Clinton added singles.

Blackhawks 5, Bobcats 3

The Blackhawks went up 1-0 in the first when Wilfredo Torres walked and Medina doubled.

In the fourth, Sanders greeted reliever Ryan Waters with a three-run double to make it 4-0. Hunter Weaver singled and Toney Mendez singled to make it 5-0.

The Bobcats got their three runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Guice singled and Hamilton tripled him home. Headrick followed with an RBI-single and Jay Dedeaux’s single also produced a run.

Logan Riddell (1-1) started, went 4 1/3 innings and took the loss. He gave up six hits, five runs and walked three. Waters pitched the final 2 2/3 innings, allowed four hits and struck out one.

Hamilton tripled and singled for JCJC, while Guice singled twice. Nick Ray, Perna, Headrick and Dedeaux added singles.

Edward Arambula entered in relief of starter Jonathon Marte and got the victory. Arambula went 2/3 of an inning, allowed three runs on four hits and struck out one. Marte went the first 4 1/3 innings, gave up no runs, four hits, walked three and struck out four.

Matt Duncan pitched the final two innings and recorded a save. He gave up no hits, walked one and struck out two.

Mendez had three singles, while Medina doubled and singled and Weaver singled twice for the Blackhawks. Sanders had a double, while Torres and Ian Texidor added singles.
