JCJC's Givens chosen as NJCAA Division I Player of the Week

ELLISVILLE – Jones County Junior College basketball standout Brandon Givens has been chosen as the NJCAA Division I National Player of the Week for the week ending Feb. 12
Givens scored 44 points to lead the Bobcats to a 90-86 road upset of then 8th-ranked Pearl River Community College on Feb. 10. In a 113-100 home victory over Meridian Community College on Feb. 7, Givens scored 29 points.
Givens, a 6-foot-6 sophomore forward from Ruffin, S.C., was 13-of-20 from the field, including a 2-of-6 effort from 3-point range, and connected on 16-of-18 foul shots against Pearl River. He also pulled down seven rebounds.
Givens leads the MACJC in scoring with a 23.9 points per game average and is also pulling down 8.3 rebounds per game.
Givens played football and basketball at Colleton High School in Walterboro, S.C. He then attended and graduated from Princeton Day Academy in Baltimore, Md. He transferred to JCJC from College of Southern Idaho.
Givens will play his final home game as a Bobcat when JCJC hosts Co-Lin Community College on Thursday on “Sophomore Night” at A.B. Howard Gymnasium.
The Lady Bobcats face the 8th-ranked Lady Wolves at 6 p.m., followed by the men’s game at 8 p.m. Both games will be shown live on www.jcjc.tv with Lance Pittman and Mark Easley on the call. Airtime is 5:55 p.m.
Both Bobcat teams will participate in the MACJC State Tournament next week at Co-Lin. The tournament will take place Feb. 21-24. The bracket will be announced Friday afternoon.
