JCJC picked fourth in Region 23 preseason baseball poll

ELLISVILLE – The Jones County Junior College baseball team is ranked fourth in the Region 23 preseason poll, according to information released Friday in the 2011 NJCAA Baseball Guide.
Defending NJCAA Division II national champion LSU-Eunice (52-13 in 2010) is rated as the top team in Region 23 in the poll, followed by Itawamba Community College (29-19), defending MACJC champion Hinds Community College (32-21) and JCJC (38-12).
LSU-Eunice is rated No. 2 in the national preseason poll and Itawamba is rated No. 6. Heartland Community College (Ill.) is ranked as the No. 1 team in the poll.
The guide, which is available for download at www.njcaa.org, also lists Bobcat sophomore pitcher Andrew Pierce and sophomore first baseman Nick Ray as Top Players Returning by District for this season.
Pierce, from Stringer, was 10-2 last year as a freshman and was a first-team All-American selection. Pierce is also mentioned as the national strikeout leader in 2010, notching 106 strikeouts in 93 innings. Ray, from Gulfport, hit .341 with five home runs last season. He is currently sidelined by a wrist injury.
Head coach Christian Ostrander’s Bobcats, 0-1, will host East Mississippi Community College, 0-4, at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Community Bank Park. JCJC hosts Faulkner State Community College (Ala.) at 2 p.m. on Tuesday.
Faulkner State went 38-21 last year and advanced to the NJCAA Division I World Series in Grand Junction, Colo. They are the preseason No. 2 team in Region 22 of Division I.
