ELLISVILLE – The sun came out, the ribbon was cut, the ceremonial first pitches were thrown and then the Jones County Junior College Lady Bobcats took the field in their Community Bank Park debut here Wednesday afternoon.
And the Lady Bobcats punctuated the festivities with a stellar performance.
Pitcher Lauren Candies allowed only a bunt single and the Lady Bobcats pounded out 12 hits of their own en route to a 12-0 shutout of the Holmes Community College Lady Bulldogs.
Game two of the doubleheader was postponed to allow the Lady Bulldogs to return to campus early in order to avoid the snow forecast for the Goodman area. It could possibly be made up a later date.
Candies, a freshman from Luling, La., gave up the bunt single in the third inning to Haley Sims. She would strike out four and walk one in the game that was shortened to five innings because of the ten-run rule.
JCJC, who scored runs in all four of its at-bats, got all of the runs it would need in the opening inning when Heidi Garcich led off the game with a line shot off of Holmes’ pitcher Emily Collins. Shannon Mosley and Alex Faciane added singles in the inning as the Lady Bobcats took a 2-0 lead.
Jones would send 10 batters to the plate in the second inning and score six runs. Kayla McDaniel had a double in the inning, while Garcich, Haley Brooke Smith, Mosley and Stacia Whitaker had singles, helping JCJC take an 8-0 lead.
The Lady Bobcats added three runs in the third inning to go up 11-0. Mosley and Jessmar Walters had doubles, while Garcich singled in the frame.
JCJC finished the scoring with a run in the fourth. Smith had a single in the inning.
Mosley, a Vossburg sophomore, doubled, singled twice and scored twice for the Lady Bobcats. Garcich, a Reserve, La., sophomore, had three singles – including two bunt singles – and scored three runs. Smith, a freshman from Enterprise, had two singles and scored twice. Walters and McDaniel had doubles, while Faciane and Whitaker had singles.
Collins started, went 1 2/3 innings, gave up eight runs on eight hits, walked three, fanned one and took the loss. Allison Ray went the final 2 2/3 innings, allowed four runs, three hits, walked one and struck out three.
The Lady Bobcats, 1-0, travel to Brewton, Ala., to face Jeff Davis Community College at 1 p.m. on Friday. They will go to Mobile, Ala., to meet Bishop State Community College at noon on Saturday.
JCJC will host Jeff Davis at 3 p.m. on Feb. 16 in games that will be audiocast on www.jcjc.tv. Lance Pittman will be on the call starting at 2:55 p.m.
Holmes is scheduled to host Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College on Friday.
