ELLISVILLE – The Baton Rouge Community College Bears scored 12 runs in their final two at-bats to beat the Jones County Junior College Bobcats, 12-3, here Wednesday afternoon at Community Bank Park.
The Bear victory spoiled the debut of the new, $2.8 million baseball/softball facility on the JCJC campus. A huge crowd was on hand for the ribbon cutting of the park and the ceremonial first pitches at both the baseball and softball fields.
Game two of the scheduled baseball doubleheader was postponed by rain. The game could possibly be made up in March.
The Bobcats took the early lead against the Bears.
In the bottom of the third inning, Sumrall freshman Chad Guice led off with a walk and Pascagoula sophomore Graham Odom reached on a bunt single. Guice took third on an error and Pascagoula freshman Zach Allen followed with a two-run double to left.
Meanwhile, JCJC starter Andrew Pierce was cruising.
Through five innings, the Stringer sophomore had nine strikeouts and had allowed only two hits. But the Bears would chase Pierce in the sixth. Josh Crowdus and Cade LeBlanc led off the inning with singles and Pierce was replaced by Josh Palmer. Palmer walked Cole Vanderlick to load the bases.
Jesse Burat then cleared the sacks with a three-run double into the left-field corner and give BRCC a 3-2 lead. A.C. Lowrance then followed with a run-scoring double to right. Logan Riddell replaced Palmer at that point. Jami Rachel’s sacrifice fly to left gave the Bears a 5-2 lead.
In the seventh, BRCC continued to pull away. Lee Elisar and LeBlanc started the inning with walks and Riddell was replaced by Tyler Fall. Vanderlick reached on a bunt single to load the bases. Burrat then delivered a two-run single to make it 7-2. Lowrance walked to load the bases and Josh Perez reached on a fielder’s choice.
Rachel then had a two-run double to make it 9-2. Crowdus was hit by a pitch and Blaine Posey had a two-run single.
Chase Stewart then entered in relief of Fall. Vanderlick’s second single of the inning drove in the final run of the frame.
In the bottom of the seventh, Darion Hamilton led off with a walk and Chase Headrick was hit by a pitch. Guice flied out to right and Hamilton advanced to third. Odom’s fielder’s choice grounder scored Hamilton with the game’s final run.
Odom singled twice to pace JCJC, 0-1. Allen doubled, while Hamilton and Guice added singles.
Pierce, a first-team NJCAA All-American as a freshman, went five-plus innings as the Bobcat starter. The Southern Miss signee gave up two runs, four hits, walked two and struck out nine. Palmer faced three batters in relief, retired none and was charged with the loss. Riddell went 1-plus inning, gave up two walks, hit one and struck out one. Fall went 1/3 of an inning and allowed four hits. Stewart gave up one hit in 2/3 of an inning.
Josh Powell went the distance and posted the victory for BRCC. He allowed five hits, two walks, hit two batters and struck out four.
Burrat had a double, single and five RBIs for the Bears, 4-2. Vanderlick and LeBlanc had two singles each. Rachel and Lowrance each had RBI doubles, while Posey, Elisar and Crowdus added singles.
