JCJC's Carey named NJCAA Division I Women's Player of the Week

 ELLISVILLE ­– Jones County Junior College basketball standout Tanecka Carey has been named the NJCAA’s Division I Women’s Player of the Week for the week of Jan. 9-15.

Carey, a 5-foot-9 sophomore guard from Jackson Murrah, helped the Lady Bobcats to a pair of victories over Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, 87-81, and Delgado Community College (La.), 93-64. She had 38 points and six assists vs. Gulf Coast on Jan. 10 and 22 points, five rebounds and five assists vs. Delgado on Jan. 13.

For the week, she averaged 30 points per game on 20-of-36 shooting (9-of-16 from 3-point range) and was a perfect 11-of-11 from the free throw line. She averaged 4 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 2.5 steals over the two games. Carey was a first-team All-MACJC and All-Region 23 performer as a freshman.

She is currently averaging 23.1 points per game, which leads the MACJC and ranks fifth nationally.

Carey has signed a Division I scholarship with the University of Southern Mississippi.

Head coach Sandra Sumrall’s Lady Bobcats are currently 11-3 overall and top the South Division with a 4-0 mark.

JCJC hosts Southwest Mississippi Community College at 6 p.m. on Thursday in A.B. Howard Gymnasium. The men’s game will follow at 8 p.m.
