ELLISVILLE – The 2011 baseball season is fast approaching.

The defending MACJC South Division champion Jones County Junior College Bobcats have been on the field at their new Community Bank Park in preparation for the season opener against Baton Rouge Community College (La.).

Head coach Christian Ostrander’s team went 38-12 last year en route to the division championship. That was on the heels of a 36-16 season in Ostrander’s first year in 2009, giving JCJC a 74-28 record over the past two years.

First pitch at the new park for the baseball opener will be at 2 p.m. on Feb. 9, while across the way the Lady Bobcat softball opener against Holmes Community College will begin at 2:30 p.m. The $2.8 million facility is considered to be one of the finest baseball/softball complexes in the South.

There will be a ribbon cutting and ceremonial first pitches at both fields, along with several other activities on that day. More details will be announced later.

The baseball stadium will have 520 seats, while the softball stadium will have 266 seats. New press boxes, scoreboards and dugouts will be at both fields, along with a concession stand and a centrally located admission area.

In addition, the “JCJC Baseball/Softball Signing Day Special” will air live on, beginning at 10 a.m. on Tuesday. The high school signees for both the Bobcat baseball and softball teams will be introduced that morning.

Lance Pittman, the “Voice of the Bobcats,” will host the show, which will feature interviews with athletic director Katie Herrington, Ostrander, softball head coach Chris Robinson, the signees and others.
