ELLISVILLE – Defense is the name of the game for both Jones County Junior College basketball teams.

Both teams are noted for scoring a bunch of points, but both head coaches attribute that to the play of the defense.

“Our defense is the thing,” said 12th year Lady Bobcat head coach Sandra Sumrall, prior to Media Day activities here Wednesday afternoon in the A.B. Howard Gymnasium. “Everybody on this level can play. In high school, it’s usually one or two players you have to worry about on the other team, but up here you have to worry about everybody.

“But I really like our quickness. We may be quicker than we have been in the past, but we just need to learn to control it.”

Men’s head coach Don “Bubba” Skelton also points to defense as being the key.

“Our players need to buy in to what we want do,” the third-year head coach said. “That includes the whole team. They have to buy in to our style and how much effort they are going to have to give, especially on the defensive end for us to generate baskets.”

Both Bobcat teams have enjoyed a great deal of success in recent years.

The Lady Bobcats have claimed two straight MACJC state championships, posting a 22-6 mark last season. The men’s team, which went 17-10 last year, captured the state title two years ago. Both teams have advanced to the Region 23 Tournament for the past two seasons.

The JCJC women, led by 5-foot-9 guard Tanecka Carey – a Southern Miss commitment – have a great deal of incentive to win the South Division regular season crown this year. The South Division women’s winner will host the MACJC Tournament on Feb. 21-24.

The Bobcats will open the 2010-11 season at home on Monday against East Mississippi Community College. The women’s game tips off at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men’s game at 7:30 p.m. The EMCC men won the Region 23 Tournament last year and are rated No. 29 in the NJCAA preseason poll for this year.

All JCJC home division games will be televised on www.jcjc.tv, while all division games and other selected games will be broadcast (audio only) on the same site. Lance Pittman and Mark Easley will provide the call on the games.

In addition, the “JCJC Basketball Media Day Special” will be posted shortly on the www.jcjc.tv website.

Rosters for both teams and a schedule are available at www.jcjc.edu. Click on “Athletics” and then click on “Basketball.”
