Bobcats fall to Southwest, 14-13

 SUMMIT – The Jones County Junior College Bobcats dropped a 14-13 decision to the Southwest Mississippi Community College Bears here Saturday afternoon.

The loss leaves JCJC with a 2-6 record, 0-5 in the South Division. Southwest is now 3-5 overall and 1-4 in the league. The six Bobcat losses have been by a combined total of 30 points.

The Bears scored first on a 24-yard run by Mardavian Martin with 4:45 left in the first quarter. Justin Holt’s extra point made it 7-0.

JCJC’s Dylan Sobiesk booted a 21-yard field goal with 12:17 left in the second quarter to make it 7-3.

The Bobcats took the lead with 7:55 left in the third quarter on a 2-yard run by Justin Gaines. Sobiesk’s extra point made it 10-7.

But the Bears quickly responded with a touchdown. Tray Bateaste scored on a 5-yard run and Holt’s extra point made it 14-10 with 5:20 left in the third quarter.

Sobiesk booted a 34-yard field goal with 11:20 left in the game, but the Bobcats would not score again.

The game ended with the Bears taking a knee at the JCJC 1-yard line.

Southwest had 15 first downs, 257 yards rushing and minus 3 yards passing for 254 yards of total offense. JCJC had eight first downs, 136 yards rushing, 40 yards passing and 176 yards of offense.

JCJC quarterback Tromarcus Toney was 7-of-18 through the air and rushed 13 times for 67 yards. Deuce Coon had three receptions for 28 yards.

Bear quarterback Vintavious Cooper carried the ball 26 times for 140 yards.

The Bobcats will end the season at home at 2 p.m. on Oct. 30 against Pearl River Community College.

Southwest closes the season at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday at East Central.
