ELLISVILLE –Recent Jones County Junior College graduate, McKenna Pippen earned a Southeastern Construction Owners and Associates Roundtable (SCOAR) scholarship while competing at the National SkillsUSA competition in Louisville, Kentucky. The $1,000 scholarship will help pay for tuition at Michigan State University when Pippen graduates from JCJC.
“My main goal is to one day own my own architectural firm or be a successful freelancer,” said Pippen. “I work hard towards my goals and it feels great to be rewarded for that!”
The Seminary native has almost completed the Drafting and Design program at JCJC. Her instructor, Karen Kirk said she knew Pippen would be successful in her endeavors because of her work ethic. She and her partner, Justin Aultman of Seminary, won first place at the State SkillsUSA competition in April and seventh place at the National SkillsUSA competition. Pippen also earned a Mississippi Space Grant Consortium Scholarship.
“She thinks outside of the box. As a matter of fact, she doesn’t even know there is a box. Creativity is in her soul and this scholarship along with her amazing attitude toward hard work and trying new things will ensure she is very successful when she completes her CAD Engineering Technology degree this December,” said Kirk.
Pippen said she hopes more people become aware of this program because it is perfect for creative individuals. It also offers several options for careers.
“I am so glad my path led me to the Drafting and Design program at JCJC. Many people are not aware of this program but I hope to spread the word! This is such an amazing program for any creative minds who also want a secure salary and career,” Pippen shared.
She is the only college student from Mississippi who earned a SCOAR scholarship. Additionally, she is one of 10 JCJC students who recently earned the new Mississippi Space Grant Consortium Scholarship.
