WESSON – The Jones County Junior College Bobcats came up just short, despite a gallant second half rally here Thursday night at Stone Stadium.

The 15th-ranked Copiah-Lincoln Community College Wolves jumped out to a 20-0 first half lead and held off the Bobcats, 20-14.

JCJC falls to 1-3 overall, 0-2 in the South Division. Co-Lin improves to 4-0 overall, 2-0 in division play.

The Bobcats struggled in the first half, but came back in the second half and made quite a game of it.

JCJC drove 89 yards in seven plays on their second possession of the third quarter. Quarterback Tromarcus Toney found wide receiver Deuce Coon on a 38-yard scoring strike. Dylan Sobiesk’s extra point made it 20-7 with 7:20 left in the third quarter. A 29-yard pass from Toney to wide receiver Kylan Pollard was a big play in the drive.

Co-Lin took the ensuing kickoff and marched from their own 45-yard line to the JCJC 17 in eight plays where the drive stalled. Justin Danise then misfired on a 34-yard field goal attempt with 2:46 left in the third quarter.

Two possessions later, the Bobcats would make the game even more interesting.

JCJC drove 94 yards in just five plays to close the gap.

Justin Gaines scored on a 1-yard plunge to end the march. Toney had pass completions of 40 yards to Pollard and 41 yards to Coon in the drive. Sobiesk’s PAT made it 20-14 with 11:03 left in the game.

The Bobcats bottled up the Wolves on their next drive and would take over on the Co-Lin 36 following a punt. JCJC moved to the Co-Lin 15, where they faced a third and 1. However, the Bobcats were called for an illegal procedure, which moved the ball back to the 20. Toney’s pass would then fall incomplete and the Bobcats attempted the field goal.

Sobiesk’s 37-yard effort was just off the mark and the Wolves took over on their own 20 with 6:29 left.

Just three plays later, JCJC’s LeRoyce Keyes came up with a fumble recovery at the Wolves’ 34 and the Bobcats were back in business.

But three plays after that, Co-Lin’s Jordan Hunt made a diving interception of a Toney pass at the Wolves’ 26 to end the threat.

The Bobcats got the ball back one more time at their own 22 with just 42 seconds left. Toney connected with Pollard for a 14-yard gain out to the 36, but three straight incomplete passes ended the game.

The Wolves got off to a great start.

Co-Lin’s Fred Fuller returned the opening kickoff 56 yards to the Bobcat 44-yard line. Five plays later on third and 14, JCJC defensive tackle Jo’nal White came up with an apparent pass interception, but the Bobcats were penalized for being offsides.

On the next play, facing a third and 9, quarterback Percy Turner kept the ball to his right and gained several yards. However, JCJC was called for a personal foul because of a ‘horse collar’ tackle on Turner that gave Co-Lin a first down at the JCJC 11.

Two plays later, Turner connected with Fuller on a 15-yard scoring pass over the middle. Danise kicked the extra point and the Wolves led 7-0 with 11:07 left in the first quarter.

JCJC threatened in the second quarter. They drove from their own 20 to the Co-Lin 30 in 11 plays. On fourth and 3, however, Toney kept the ball and came up a yard shy of the first down.

The Wolves then took the ball and marched 72 yards in nine plays. Titus Mobley scored on a 2-yard run. However, Danise’s extra point attempt hit the right upright and was no good, but the Wolves still led 13-0.

Co-Lin added to the lead with a crucial score just before the end of the first half.

The Wolves started a drive at their own 41 with just 1:13 left in the second quarter. But they used a 44-yard pass from Turner to Damien Burnett to move from midfield to the JCJC 6. Two plays later, Turner dropped back to pass, took off to his right and made it just to the pylon on the right corner of the end zone for the score. Danise’s conversion made it 20-0 with 12 seconds left in the first half.

Toney ended up completing 10-of-28 passes for 212 yards. Pollard had five receptions for 98 yards and Coon had three catches for 95 yards. DeAnthony Pickens rushed 10 times for 34 yards to lead the Bobcats on the ground.

Turner rushed for 73 yards on 14 carries and completed 8-of-24 passes for 146 yards to account for 219 yards of offense. Mobley rushed 20 times for 65 yards.

The Wolves controlled the stats in the first half, while the Bobcats had the better of it in the second half.

JCJC had 212 yards passing, 72 yards rushing and 284 yards of offense. They finished with 13 first downs. The Bobcats had only 66 yards of offense and five first downs in the first half.

Co-Lin had 146 yards passing, 137 yards rushing and 283 yards of offense. They finished with 14 first downs. Co-Lin had 181 yards of offense and nine first downs in the first half.

The Bobcats will try to snap a three-game losing streak when they return home at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 30, to meet Holmes Community College. Holmes fell to 0-4 with a 35-20 defeat to Northeast on Thursday. The game can be seen on www.jcjc.tv and can be heard on WGDQ-FM, 93.1, with Lance Pittman calling the play-by-play and Mark Easley providing commentary. Airtime will be at 6:30 p.m.

Co-Lin travels to Southwest next Thursday.
