ELLISVILLE – Mississippi Gulf Coast multimedia artist and the Co-Owner and Creative Director at Almost Circle Gallery in Biloxi, Julia Reyes’ work will be on display at Jones County Junior College in Ellisville through February 9. The public is invited to a reception in her honor at the Eula Bass Lewis Art Gallery on Thursday, February 9 at 1 p.m.
On display are paintings with a variety of oil on canvas, acrylic and cold wax on either canvas or panel and a large mixed media installation with hanging clay pieces as well as a painted canvas. Her artwork is not subtle; it demands the viewer to spend time gazing into it explained JCJC art instructor, Mark Brown.
“There are layers of translucent images hidden within the picture. Her artwork is bright and fun. Discovering the various layers and images in her work is entertaining. Some of the items are relatable and others share a message,” said Brown.
Reyes describes her work has visual traces of how it has evolved in an effort to create a direct relationship between the imagery and how it was created. Her webpage, JuliaReyesart.com shares her thoughts on her work.
“I consider making art a lot like life: a constant playful and intuitive battle. I aim to portray the human experience through a play on the context of objects. On a daily basis, we have a visual dialogue with objects, colors and materials in our surroundings. I am in a constant state of exploration of ways to bring this dialogue to the surface in a conversation with the viewer. That being said, I believe communication is the key to the interconnectedness among all humans.”
The 2010 Mississippi State University Bachelor of Fine Arts graduate has developed outreach projects as an educator at the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art in Biloxi, Mississippi, Space 301 in Mobile, Alabama and Art Can Change Everything collective. In 2012, Reyes was a Mississippi Arts Commission Artist Fellowship recipient. Reyes has displayed her work throughout the state over the last eight years, earning honors at several of the exhibitions for her work.
