ELLISVILLE – Jones County Junior College’s Eula Bass Lewis Art Gallery will feature the floral art works of Sandersville resident, Mandy Buchanan through September 25. Her floral still life acrylic paintings will be display at no cost to the public.
Buchanan is also scheduled to share about her artwork and techniques at a lecture with JCJC students on September 22, at 1 p.m. in the gallery. This session with the artist is also open to the public and is free of charge.
When the JCJC alumna isn’t painting or creating, she facilitates the Education Programs at the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art. Buchanan works closely with museum staff to create activities and educational opportunities correlating with exhibits and events. She also works closely with Lauren Rogers Museum of Art Outreach Coordinator, Angie King. The two can be seen in many places within the community such as convalescent homes, schools or community centers leading impactful art activities including painting, pottery, sculpture and art history projects.
JCJC art instructor, Mark Brown said he is proud to have such a talented alumna’s work on display this month. He explains Buchanan is able to create using various mediums and in different artistic ways.
“Although skilled with many media, Buchanan is known for her still life paintings. Mandy draws inspiration from artists such as Henri Matisee, as well as those within the museum collection. Her still life paintings are full of vibrant color. Buchanan mildly abstracts her subjects, while keeping their form and color. Mandy's images allow for the perception of the real object, while still retaining the desired texture and fluidity of paint. Another of her talents includes reclaiming discarded surfaces such as shelves or antique doors, which further enrich her play on texture,” said Brown.
The gallery is open: Monday through Thursday, 8:00 to 3:00 p.m. and is closed during lunch from 11:30--12:00. Fridays the gallery is open from 8:00 a.m. until 2:30p.m.
