Ex-Bobcat Borne scores TD for UAB

 ELLISVILLE – Several former Jones County Junior College Bobcats were on the field for senior colleges for the opening weekend of the 2010 college football season.

Alabama-Birmingham running back Daniel Borne had a 15-yard touchdown reception in the Blazers’ 32-31 loss to Florida Atlantic on Sept. 2. Borne, a senior from Marrero, La., also had three carries for 18 yards.

Three other former Bobcats played on defense for UAB. Raleigh junior defensive back Jamie Bender had two tackles, while Mobile, Ala., senior defensive back Elliott McGaskin and senior Crawfordville, Fla., linebacker Darrion Wilson had one tackle each. UAB travels to SMU for a 7 p.m. game on Saturday.

Former Bobcat Akeem Davis, a junior defensive back from Laurel, had two tackles for Memphis in the Tigers’ 49-7 loss to Mississippi State. Memphis goes to East Carolina at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

Former Bobcat Ramon Blakeney, a junior linebacker from Northeast Jones, had two solo tackles, four assists and six total tackles for North Alabama as the Lions beat Henderson State, 27-10. Ex-Bobcat wide receiver Tristan Purifoy of Hanceville, Ala., also played for UNA. The Lions go to Glenville St., (WV), at noon Saturday.

Former Bobcat Tyler Caldwell, a senior from Laurel, averaged 39.5 yards per punt for Delta State in the Fighting Okra’s 32-17 loss to Jackson State. Ex-Bobcat Chase Sherman, a junior from D’Iberville, started in the offensive line for DSU. Delta State hosts Arkansas Tech at 7 p.m. on Thursday. The game can be seen on gostatesmentv.com

Former Bobcat defensive end Tyrunn Walker had one tackle, six assists and seven total tackles for Tulsa in the Golden Hurricane’s 51-49 loss to East Carolina on Sunday. Tulsa hosts Bowling Green at 6 p.m. on Saturday.

Ex-JCJC wide receiver Tebiarus Gill had six receptions for 68 yards and one tackle in Troy’s 30-27 victory over Bowling Green. Former Bobcat defensive lineman Riley Flowers had one solo tackle, one assist and two total tackles for Trojans. Gill is a senior from Mobile, Ala., and Flowers is a senior from Geneva, Ala. The Trojans go to Oklahoma State at 6:05 p.m. on Saturday.

Ex-Bobcat defensive back Derek Welch, a senior from Taylorsville, had one solo tackle, one assist and two total tackles for Tennessee-Martin in the Skyhawks’ 50-0 loss to Tennessee on Saturday. UT-Martin goes to Southeastern Louisiana at 6 p.m. on Saturday.

Former Bobcat senior offensive linemen Evan Niles and R.J. Brown suited up for Southeastern Louisiana in the Lions’ 27-21 loss to Tulane on Friday. Niles is from Mize and Brown is from Greene County.
