ELLISVILLE –Jones County Junior College’s Maroon Typhoon Marching Band finished it’s week of camp by beginning a new tradition called a “March-Off.” Interim Director of Bands, Jeff Cannon introduced the marching fundamentals of a military style band with the nearly 200-member band, August 5. The goal, Cannon explained is to get everyone marching in sync and uniformly. After 40-minutes of listening, recognizing and executing new and complicated commands called out to a four-count beat, three students managed to survive to claim the title of “March-Off Winners.”
“It was amazing to watch because it is new to these students and they bought into the drill. I think they liked it!” said Cannon. “Ultimately, the marching drills are designed to perfect and prepare the Maroon Typhoon for its performance in the McDonald's® Thanksgiving Parade in Chicago, Illinois on Thanksgiving Day, as well as our local performances.”
The 2015 Maroon Typhoon March-Off Winners were tuba player, Branson Coburn from Pearl taking first place, South Jones’ Lee Ann Nobles, who clarinet and percussionist Ty (Bret) Evans, a graduate of Northeast Jones took third place. Each student earned a trophy and bragging rights.
The first performance of the Maroon Typhoon will be at the annual Band Exhibition on Tuesday, August 25, and the first home JCJC football game is Saturday, August 29. For more information about the JCJC Maroon Typhoon contact Jeff Cannon at 601-477-4095.
