MOORHEAD – It was a solid performance for the 19th-rated Jones County Junior College Bobcats in the 2010 season opener here Thursday at Jim Randall Stadium on a warm summer evening.
The Bobcats were efficient all the way around and whipped the homestanding Mississippi Delta Community College Trojans, 34-3.
JCJC got a sharp performance from Memphis, Tenn., sophomore quarterback Tromarcus Toney. Toney, a transfer from Itawamba Community College, completed 19-of-29 passes for 179 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. Quitman freshman running back DeAnthony Pickens rushed 17 times for 58 yards and a pair of scores. Baton Rouge, La., freshman wide receiver Deuce Coon had six receptions for 57 yards.
Defensively, JCJC did not allow the Trojans to dent the end zone. The Bobcats got pressure all evening from ends Ryan Robinson and Anthony Wilson, along with tackles Jo’nal White and Mario Owens, along with linebacker Kewon Hunter. White added a blocked field goal, while freshmen Antonio Parker and Martrez Townes had pass interceptions.
Freshmen placekicker Dylan Sobiesk booted field goals of 25 and 49 yards and was 4-for-4 on extra points, while freshman punter Slater Smith nailed two punts for a 49-yard average.
Head coach Eddie Pierce’s Bobcats will return to the Delta region next week. JCJC will travel to Clarksdale to take on Coahoma Community College at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 9. The Tigers dropped a 33-6 road decision to Co-Lin in their opener.
The Trojans travel to Perkinston to battle Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College on Sept. 9.
JCJC wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard.
The Bobcats took the game’s opening kickoff and drove 58 yards in 13 plays. JCJC started the drive at its own 34, picked up four first downs and moved to the Trojan 8-yard line, where the drive stalled. Sobiesk booted a 25-yard field goal to give Jones a 3-0 lead with 8:35 left in the first quarter.
Mississippi Delta then took the Bobcat kickoff and gained a pair of first downs. However, on fourth and 15 at its own 43, the Trojans tried to punt, but the ball was snapped way over punt Sam Rustom’s head. He recovered the ball, but JCJC would take over at the Trojan 13.
Three plays later, Toney connected with Warner Robins, Ga., freshman wide receiver Rashad Wynes on an 11-yard scoring strike on a third and 8 play. Sobiesk’s conversion made it 10-0 with 4:48 left in the opening quarter.
The Trojans would then take the JCJC kickoff and drive for their only points of the game. MDCC moved from its own 33 to a first and goal at the Jones’ 3. But the Bobcats would hold the Trojans on a two plays from the 1 and force a field goal attempt.
Ridge Rochell booted a 20-yard field goal with five seconds left in the first quarter and Jones would lead 10-3.
The Bobcats would then take advantage of a turnover to extend the advantage midway through the second quarter.
Smith boomed a punt 50 yards from his own 10 to the Delta 40. However, Tevin Thomas touched the ball while trying to field it over his shoulder and JCJC’s Chris Smith – a Laurel freshman – recovered at the Delta 38-yard line.
Four plays later, Pickens took an option pitch to the left on a third and 3 play, broke several tackles and went 17 yards for the touchdown. Sobiesk’s extra point gave Jones a 17-3 lead with 7:28 left in the first half.
Delta would respond with another drive. The Trojans drove from their own 31 to the Bobcat 8 in 12 plays.
On fourth and goal, Rochell’s 25-yard field goal attempt was blocked by White and recovered by Townes to end the threat.
JCJC wasted little time to extend the lead in the second half.
After forcing a punt on Delta’s opening possession of the third quarter, Jones took over at its own 18. The Bobcats moved steadily downfield and would face a third and 6 at the Delta 30.
At this point, Toney would connect with Wayne County freshman Calvin McDougle on a 30-yard post pattern for the score. The play ended an 82-yard, 12-play drive and after Sobiesk converted the extra point, the Bobcats led 24-3 with 5:21 left in the third quarter.
The JCJC defense would set up the next score.
Parker picked off a Josh Robinson pass at his own 38. He would return the pick 38 yards to the Trojan 24.
Jones would lose 8 yards in three plays, but Sobiesk would come in and drill a 49-yard field goal to give the Bobcats a 27-3 lead with 1:17 remaining in the third quarter.
The Bobcats ended the scoring in the fourth quarter when they marched 59 yards in nine plays. Pickens capped the drive with a 1-yard plunge with 5:11 left in the game. Sobiesk would add the extra point.
Jones ended up with 16 first downs, 152 yards rushing on 34 attempts, 179 yards passing and 331 yards of total offense.
Mississippi Delta had 12 first downs, 80 yards rushing on 40 attempts, 148 yards passing and 228 yards of total offense.
