Radionian receives 13 first place awards, 27 total awards

Jones County Junior College’s student newspaper, the Radionian, won 13 first place awards at the O.C. McDavid/Mississippi Press Association Education Foundation’s Better Newspaper Contest held March 26 in Jackson.

 The Jones newspaper took home 13 first place awards, a total of 27 awards overall, and the General Excellence award in the community college division. This marks the eighth year in a row that the Radionian has taken home top honors at the competition.

The Radionian received first place in the following categories: design, front page, first place for a news story by students Breanna Collins and Ariel Young; first place for sports news by student Josh Beasley; for sports feature, Christian Miller; news photo, Jessica Blackwell; sports photo, Troy Orgeron; feature photo, Troy Orgeron; single advertisement, Hailey Ishee; miscellaneous advertisement, Hailey Ishee; feature, Trey Howard; editorials, Heather Allen, Chance Clark, Ariel Young.

The Radionian also placed second for news, Ariel Young; third place for sports, Josh Beasley; third place for sports feature, Josh Beasley; third place for general interest column, Marianna Lunsford; third place for feature story, Troy Orgeron; second place for news photo, Anna Beth Houston; third place for sports photo, Anna Beth Houston; second place for single advertisement, Josue Gonzalez; second place for miscellaneous advertisement, Joseph Chip Cooley; second place for graphic, Hailey Ishee and third place for the website www.bobcatpress.com.

The staff swept the investigative package category, receiving first place for their package on online safety, second place for their package on beauty standards and third place for their package on sexual assault. Several members of the Radionian staff each wrote separate stories on these topics that were featured throughout the package. Staff members include Wes Herring, Dalton Middleton, Ian Yelverton, Bethany Smith, Lunsford, Young, Ishee, Clark and Collins.
