JCJC “Bake Off” tests decorating skills

ELLISVILLE – Seven Jones County Junior College culinary arts students’ baking skills were put to the test recently. The Cake Show “Bake Off” tests the student’s baking and decorating skills as well as presentation of their product. Ariana Harrison of McComb made a wedding cake with a fall color theme learning a new way to create flowers.
“This was my first time working with gum paste to create flowers. I hope to do it again and be like my mom who bakes cakes out of her home,” said Harrison.
Petal’s Brenda Hegwood created an elegant red and black themed cake. She said she loves to cook but baking was a challenge for her.
“It was very time consuming. I love to cook but I’m not sure I want to bake for a living so I’m glad I had this opportunity in class.”
JCJC culinary arts instructor, Gloria Newell explained, “TV cooking shows don’t really show what it takes to cook a meal or decorate a cake. There’s a lot more to it than what you see on TV.”
Richton’s Jacqulyn Smith-Laythe said she loves to bake for her family but this assignment made her realize she is not a baker! Making this cake took 24 hours and we had to do it in small segments throughout the week.
“I have a huge appreciation for bakers because you have to have patience. The whole process is not easy. Laying out the fondant, getting wrinkles out and trying to measure how much you need to cover the cake is not as easy as it seems,” said Smith Laythe.
JCJC’s culinary program exposes students to a variety of cooking styles and venues but Newell stresses the basics. She added, if a student has a good foundation to build upon, students will be more marketable upon graduation.
