ELLISVILLE – Presbyterian Christian High School continues its domination in the Newton Division in week two of the regular season of Jones County Junior College’s Bobcat Math League. The PCS Bobcats knocked off newcomers, the Cougars of Columbia Academy, 105 to 55. Lawrence County is licking its wounds as it suffers another loss, with Sacred Heart finding its first win this season. The Sacred Heart Crusaders obliterated the Lawrence County Cougars, 112 to 35. Oak Grove had the week off from head-to-head competition but added 44 points after completing a 30-minute written math quiz that all teams take in the first half of weekly competition.

After two weeks into the season, Oak Groves’ Ruby Liag, Nick Sciortino, Cole Sisson and Alicia Brown of Presbyterian Christian have a perfect 100 percent average in the individual portion of the competition. Each mathlete has earned the “Most Outstanding Player” status. The next five highest scoring individual mathletes all tied with a 95 percent average.

“This is the first week the ‘Most Outstanding Player’ leaders are now being recognized.  For weeks one to three, players have to participate in only one match to be ranked. In week four, they need to participate in at least two matches. After week four, they will need to participate in at least three matches,” according to Bob Stevens, JCJC math instructor, BML referee and statistician.

Continuing its winning ways, the Stringer Red Devils easily defeated the Richton Rebels in Einstein Division action. Stringer won the match, 97 to 46. Taylorsville earned its first win of the season against West Jones, 61 to 37. Northeast Jones didn’t have a competitor this week but racked up 46 points in the written test portion of competition.

The Wayne County War Eagles delivered newcomers, the Rebels of Heidelberg Academy another loss. Wayne County destroyed Heidelberg Academy, 63 to 15, and continues to lead in the Fibonacci Division. The Braves of South Jones managed to avoid a slaughter by fending off the Raleigh Lions, 48 to 31. The Quitman Panthers fared well in competition against the Laurel Tornadoes with a win of 43 to 36.

It was tough for mathletes in the Pythagoras Division to find a win this week with some teams narrowly escaping defeat. Division leaders, the Perry Central Bulldogs secured a win against the Mt. Olive Pirates with a 32 to 24 score. Bay Springs’ Bulldogs squeaked out a win against the Sylva Bay Saints with a score of 22 to 19.  The Seminary Bulldogs locked in the win by one point scoring, 29, against the Collins Tigers’ 28 points.
