A federal grant awarded to undergraduate students, who have not received a baccalaureate degree, signifies financial need, and meets eligibility requirements. This grant does not have to be repaid, as long as the student remains enrolled more than 60% of the semester. No other need-based aid will be awarded until Pell Grant eligibility (need) has been determined.
Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant
Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) is a need-based program available to a limited number of students demonstrating substantial financial need. Availability of funds is limited and is based on yearly federal allocations.
To qualify for these loans, the student must demonstrate financial need as a result of filing a FAFSA. The annual amount that may be borrowed per year is set by the federal government and is based upon the student's grade level. The interest on this loan is paid by the government while the student is enrolled at least half-time. The student becomes responsible for interest and principal payments six months after graduation or dropping below half-time enrollment.
The only difference between this loan and a Subsidized Loan is that the Unsubsidized Loan is not need-based and the student is charged interest on these loans from the date of first receipt of loan funds. Although the student must complete a FAFSA to qualify for an Unsubsidized Loan, eligibility is not determined based on need, but based on the student's cost of attendance minus other financial aid the student expects to receive. Repayment provisions are the same as Subsidized Loans.
Parents of a dependent student may apply for a PLUS Loan to help meet the student's cost of attendance not covered by other financial aid. Interest rates and repayment provisions on PLUS loans are generally more favorable than other consumer loans available for educational expenses. Repayment starts as soon as funds are disbursed. PLUS applications may be obtained from the Financial Aid Office.
